Dinah Dufton
Biography
Initially interested in genetics and medical intervention and how this connects with the creative process, my work focussed on creating hyper-real people on the canvas, especially 'designer babies' and 'dream girls.' I use topography as a language to describe my forms in what appear to be concrete terms - the 'factual' language of science. However, the images are manipulated, reconstructed and reinvented - aspirational models that describe the perplexing dualities of the female creator and the society within which she lives.
From here, work shifts to mapping and exploring the nature of the desire to create itself and the means we use. The motif of the bed becomes the locus of desire: the stage for the conception of those dreams - in all senses - and accompanying shadow paintings come from the reveries of lying in bed watching the walls come alive.
