Biography

In his work Jan Morgan is aiming to create bronze sculpture that can be understood in a very direct way. Narrative is very important to him, showing a moment in time. The viewer sees the message clearly and immediately in a very contemporary way.

Animals give a wide scope for such work. The drama of being chased or leaping through the air provides us with a snapshot in their lives. Believable fluid works are underpinned by a strong understanding of anatomy executed in both a detailed and loose style.

The clean-cut straight lines of solid wooden blocks then contrast the style. A deliberate combination of materials and contrasting forms brought together to enhance the work.

Jan became a sculptor after a career as a freelance toy designer. He has always had clay to hand spending many hours in his family’s Ceramics studio. He studied product design at Bristol University and later moved on to freelance toy design after winning the British Toy and Hobby Associations ‘Design a toy competition’ in 1991.

Although his time as a toy designer led to many interesting and varied projects he always had a desire return to sculpture being influenced by the work of Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and many others.

We’re pleased to exhibit such a fresh approach to animal sculpture. His vision to update this genre and make it available to an appreciative audience is one we’re looking forward to seeing more of.

All works are bronze / wood, signed, dated and numbered.
