A fresh approach to animal sculpture from a promising new artist
Leaps and Bounds
On the run
Jan became a sculptor after a varied and successful career as a freelance toy designer, having studied product design at Bristol University. He spent many hours in his family’s ceramics studio and has always had clay to hand, so it’s not surprising that he returned to sculpture. The aim of his work is to create bronze figures that can be understood in a very direct way. His works here capture animals in a moment in time – the drama of being chased or leaping through the air provides a snapshot of their lives. The clean-cut straight lines of solid wooden blocks contrast with the fluid style of the bronze sculptures. This deliberate combination of materials and contrasting forms are brought together to enhance the work. All works are bronze/wood, signed, dated and numbered.
