Mark Johnston
A highly respected abstract landscape painter
Mark studied at Newcastle College of Art, Cumbria College and Brighton University and continues to live and paint in Brighton. He chooses to work within the long tradition of landscape painting and his influences include Rembrandt and Whistler, with their masterly use of light and atmospheric qualities, along with more recent movements in abstract expressionism.
He describes the process of painting as ‘a pure journey’, like walking in the landscape. He works by building up layers of paint, like sediment “It’s the process of painting that is the real buzz,” he says. “The end is not planned until the painting has a mystique and spirit of its own.”
